On July 5th 2010 Ms Diana Antonova, Executive Director of the Foundation, announced the beginning of the first "day of studies" in the Children's Summer Academy in the open-air restaurant of the "Bistra and Galina" Hotel. The initiative comprised 130 prize pupils aged 9 – 16 who had achieved excellent results in the relevant fields of studies. The aim of the project was to scout for talents by offering possibilities for interesting non-standard extracurricular activities combined with entertainment in the leisure time. This year the initiative included training in nine "classrooms". The training sessions and tuition continued 12 for ten days with duration of four hours each. Lunch was provided by the Foundation, as well as all necessary materials and aids required. In each classroom specialists in the relative fields worked with the children without payment.

The programmers are the youngest academicians who are involved in the most serious of sciences – mathematics. They had the challenging task to acquire basic skills in the field of programming, namely "++" and "DEF C++". After a week-long theoretical preparation, assignments and problem solving, they went on to compose their own small programmes. Their hard work and joint efforts resulted in the successful demonstration of their programmes to the public.

In the "Carnival Technique" classroom academicians worked under the guidance of representatives from the Association for Harmonious Development and Carnivals. Ivan, Mihaela and Denitza initiated the children into the ways of organising carnivals, various carnival games, conjuring tricks, juggling, throwing of pois, made by themselves and others. The classes of yoga and gymnastics became favourite for many fans of sedentary activities such as computer games. They prepared their own performance with a lot of imagination and improvisations, which was the culmination of the closing concert.

Traditionally the "Journalism" classroom offers tuition in various journalistic genres. During the first week they were instructed by the journalist from Radio Rousse Iglika Peeva. Under her professional guidance many reportages on topical subjects were created and broadcast. The second week was devoted to written journalism – the skills to write articles, to make journalistic investigations, to follow and report the news. Sonia Alexieva, Assistant Professor, PHD, from the New Bulgarian University – Sofia revealed the subtleties of the trade and assigned personal tasks to each member of the editorial board of the future newspaper. An editor-in-chief and deputy editors were elected, as well as journalists in charge of the sports, culture and economy columns. This year the children decided unanimously that their newspaper will be called the "Summer Smile" to be presented in an electronic format. The newspaper was submitted for participation in the Fourth "Stoyan Mihailovski" National Competition for Literature and Journalism and won the Special Prize. Just like real journalists they organised a press conference for the media in Rousse to present "Bulletin 2009" of the "Bistra and Galina" Foundation.

The children in the "Entertaining Psychology" classroom were instructed in methods of autopsychotraining – self-analysis, self-control, selfperfection. They acquired skills to ask constructive questions, to make interviews and analyse them, to stimulate their internal intellectual and creative resources, to communicate adequately. They demonstrated their newly acquired skills by performing their own cautionary tale dealing with current problems in the relationship of parents and children, then analysed it for the spectators.

The participants in the "Folklore Dances" classroom also underwent an initial theoretical preparation including information about the major folklore regions with their characteristic dances and national costumes. Afterwards they began learning parts of a dance, the choreography of which was specially devised for them by Mr. Donev and Mrs. Krusteva. Dressed in beautiful national costumes the young dancers closed the Academy at the festive concert in the Municipal Plenary Hall under the accompaniment of continuous applause.

The interest in the "Entertaining Psychology and Fun Shui" classroom was greatest probably because there is something mysterious and irrevocable in the predictions of the stars and the planets and their "advice" to us how to arrange our lives. Engineer Banko Pironkov introduced them to the objective laws of Eastern philosophy, namely that Fun Shui aims at improving the quality of human existence by means of providing the best conditions of life in all places where people live, work and dwell. The ultimate goal is the attainment of harmony between the energies of the earth, the people and heaven – manifestations of the universal life-giving energy Tzi. The children themselves defined the positive and negative examples connected with the architecture of our city according to Fun Shui and showed a multimedia presentation at the final concert.

The "Quilling – Paper Plastic" classroom – the new and unfamiliar always provokes great interest in children. Eleonora Karachorova from the Centre for Social Services – Rousse and her assistant Viara Petrova disclosed secrets of creating astounding artwork from paper strips. They showed them a special technique how to work with a multi-layer paper roll of different width, in the form of spiral, quadrangle, oval, etc. Using these they made greeting cards, souvenirs, panels and others. The most beautiful work – a clock decorated in the "Quilling" style – was given as a present to Mrs. Burdarova, chairperson of the "Bistra and Galina" Foundation.

The Professional Studio "Cultural and Historical Heritage" has already become traditional in the Academy programme. For the third successive year museum experts from the Regional Historical Museum of Rousse impart their knowledge and their love for history to the academicians. The participants aged 13 – 15 had the opportunity to get in touch with the interior world of the museum – the place where the curators discover and preserve valuable exhibits, creating the "cultural product" to be viewed by the museum visitors. In the different sections of the museum the academicians got acquainted with very interesting exponents which evoked their interest and made their research potential manifest. The visit to the "Tcherven" medieval fortress and the work with a British team of archaeologists at the archaeological excavations will remain an unforgettable and perhaps their first professional experience.

The "Computer Design" classroom – instructor Alexandrina Tozeva, grantee of the Foundation, at present an undergraduate in the United Kingdom. This was our new challenge addressed to young people aged 15 – 18. Sandra initiated them into the professional computer design programmes Indesign Illustrator and helped them produce advertising posters for various products. These were printed in an advertising studio and displayed in the foyer of the Plenary Hall of the Municipality at the time of the closing of the Academy.

On July 9th the "Bistra and Galina" Foundation organised an excursion for all participants and instructors of the "Children's Summer Academy 2010". This time it included the town of Veliko Turnovo and the village of Arbanasi. In the old capital the academicians saw the Tzarevetz fortress, the church "St. Forty Holy Martyrs" and the grave of Tsar Kaloyan. After the tasty meal at noon in the "Izvora" complex they visited the sights of Arbanasi. In the Konstantsaliyata's House, one of the most remarkable and representative monument of house architecture at the end of the XVII century, they examined the exposition showing the lifestyle of a rich Arbanasi family and felt the spirit of the Bulgarian patriarchal family. The church "The Nativity of Christ" in Arbanasi - the oldest, the most interesting and the largest in area, built and decorated with frescos during the hardest years of the Turkish yoke by unknown Bulgarian icon-painters, impressed the children with the authenticity of the icons and the indomitable Bulgarian spirit.

The "Children's Summer Academy 2010" of the "Bistra and Galina" Hotel-Foundation closed formally with a session in the Municipal Plenary Hall attended by all participants, parents, friends, donors and journalists. The children from each "classroom" showed what they had learned, visualised the newly acquired skills with presentations and games with the audience. The academicians really deserved the round of applause for their talents and perseverance. In the final part all children and their instructors were presented with certificates. The most coveted moment was the cutting of the two big cakes relished by participants and guests alike.

The team of the "Bistra and Galina" Hotel - Foundation would like to give due credit to all those who supported the project and contributed to its successful realisation, namely: the "Angel Kunchev" University of Rousse, the "Elias Canetti" Professional School of Economics and Management, the Rousse Municipality, which provided their halls to be used free of charge, as well as all instructors and volunteers participating in the preparation and realisation of the Academy without payment.
