For the third successive year the “Bistra & Galina” Foundation organised “Summer Children Academy 2003” which was held in the period July 21 – August 1, 2003. The initiative was addressed to 64 children from Rousse and the region aged 12 – 16, selected along two criteria excellence at school and proven results in the respective field. The project involves a ten-day tuition in five “classrooms”, in each of which distinguished artists and experts in the field worked with the children.
In the classroom “Applied Arts” – painting on glass and clay, Slavina Ruseva – specialist from the “Griffon” gallery - instructed the young artists in different decorative technoques of pottery painting. The children made their own clay sculptures and fugurines, which they baked and coloured. They learned about different kinds of clay, ceramic colouring and glazing, the peculiarities of shaping and baking pottery. The glass painting sessions challenged the creative fantasy of the children. Employing different stained glass techniques they created original multicoloured compositions.
Desislav Gechev - specialist from the “Griffon” gallery and Alexandra Gabrovska – Foundation grantee, student in the Secondary School of Arts “Prof. Veselin Stoyanov” taught the students in this classroom of iconograpgy. The children went through a short theory session, learned about the development of iconography through the ages, about the basic techniques to use and the specific materials. Without any practical interference on the part of their teachers, they created icons putting a part of themselves and trying to follow the canon. The iconographers worked on pieces of wood processed and grounded with distemper.
In the Mathematics and Computer Linguistcs “classroom the participants learned and solved linguistic tasks - translation of words, names of figures, coding, visit-card design, translation of sentences. In the second part of their sessions they worked at computers and devised their own tasks. Chief assistant-professor Iliana Raeva, lecturer in the Rousse University “Angel Kunchev” and instructor at the Rousse school in linguistcs was their tutor.
The “Informatics” classroom had Engineer Milko Marinov, PhD, lecturer in the Rousse University “Angel Kunchev”and Georgi Kudrev – Foundation grantee, at present student in the Sofia University “St.Kliment Ohridski”, “Informatics” field of concentration, were the instructors and the children worked with Word 97, Power Point, Internet. To demonstrate what they had learned, they made their own presentations.
The children from the “Y-shu” course were instructed by Maria Nedelcheva – national champion in u-shu and leader of the Sports Club “Kalagia”. They learned the basic style in u-shu – chan chuan – basic exercises to control the body, flexibility, coordination. The practised major techniques of u-shu – position and movements of the arms, legs and body and connecting the elements in movement. The participants were introduced to the philosophy and the masters of u-shu, the terms in Chinese, the rules of behaviour – discipline, ethics, relationships.
The Academy classes were 4 hours long with a break for lunch, provided by the Foundation. The children were given season tickets as well as all necessary materials and aids.
On July 26 there was a trip to Veliko Turnovo and Arbanasi, where the participants and their instructors saw the historical and cultural sights and worked in plain-air. They visited the Art Gallery “Boris Denev” in Veliko Turnovo and Violeta Radkova, the well-known Rousse artist, was their guide. In the “Revival – Constituent Assembly” Museum the participants looked around the hall where the first Bulgarian Constitution was elaborated and retraced Bulgaria’s century old history through photos and expositions. In Arbanasi the children visited the oldest local “ Nativity Church” and the museum “The Konstantsaliev House” where they were given a lecture.
The young “academics” had lunch in the “Izvora” complex in Arbanasi. After that they had plain-air sessions in the different “classrooms” while the Fine Arts and Iconograpgy classes painted what they had seen.
On August 1 the Academy was formally closed in the “Bistra & Galina” summer garden. It was attended by all childern participants, instructors, parents, reporters, guests. Representatives of each “classroom” made demonstrations of what they had learned during the sessions. The Iconography and Fine Arts participants displayed their works – icons, stained glass articles, pottery and figures - on special stands. The Informatics and Applied Linguistics classes prepared a joint multimedia presentation with which they demonstrated what can be done with Power Point thanks to imagination and knowledge. The young u-shu players dressed in traditional kimonos made an effective demonstration of their accomplishments, while Ivan Deskov showed techniques with a shaolin sword and chan chuan.
